American-Scandinavian Foundation

The American-Scandinavian Foundation is the leading cultural and educational link between the United States and Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. An American nonprofit organization headquartered in New York City, ASF works to build international understanding with an extensive program of fellowships, grants, intern/trainee sponsorship, publishing, and membership offerings.

Fellowships of up to $23,000 are intended to support an academic year-long stay, and priority is given to students at the graduate level who need to spend time at foreign academic or research institutions. Grants starting from $5,000 are available for shorter research visits, both at the graduate and post-doctoral levels. Funding is available to candidates in all fields. The American competition, open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents, has a deadline of November 1, 2010.

The foundation's Visiting Lectureship program invites U.S. colleges and universities to apply for funding to host a visiting lecturer from Norway or Sweden. The program provides awards of $20,000 for appointments of one semester. Lectureships should be in the areas of public policy, conflict resolution, healthcare, environmental studies, or multiculturalism. The award is appropriate not just for Scandinavian studies departments, but for any department or inter-disciplinary program with an interest in incorporating a Scandinavian focus into its course offerings. Applicants are asked to submit a Letter of Intent by November 5, 2010, describing the proposed visiting lectureship.

Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program

The Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) Program supports overseas projects in training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies for groups of teachers, students, and faculty engaged in a common endeavor. Projects are short-term and include seminars, curriculum development, or group research or study.

Hadassah Foundation Request for Proposals in Israel and U.S.

The Hadassah Foundation is dedicated to refocusing the priorities of the Jewish community through innovative and creative funding for women and girls in the United States and Israel.

The foundation has issued a Request for Proposals for gender-sensitive social change projects that help low-income women in Israel achieve economic security. The foundation will provide a small number of grants to innovative projects in one or more of the following areas: grassroots programs that provide low-income women with resources and training to enable them to become financially self-sufficient; legal and policy advocacy initiatives that benefit low-income women and help them to improve their economic situation; and business development services that help women who own established businesses to improve their outreach and attract new customers and markets. Applicants must have Israeli amutah or mossad tziburi status.

The foundation has also issued a Request for Proposals for gender-sensitive social change projects serving women and girls in the United States Jewish community. The foundation will provide a small number of grants in one or more of the following areas: projects that encourage self-confidence, leadership skills, and healthy lifestyle choices among adolescent girls and young women in the Jewish community and/or build awareness among influential adults (parents, teachers, other mentors) in their lives; and projects that help women help women and/or girls achieve economic security.

Canadian Human Rights Commission Operational Guidance Document grant

As part of the Canadian Human Rights Commission’s efforts to foresee and understand the trends and shifts that are taking place in Canadian society and remain a leader in disseminating human rights knowledge, it is implementing an advanced and policy-driven research program in human rights. The Commission has a requirement for an Operational Guidance Document and a Report on the issue of ensuring national security while protecting human rights to be carried out in accordance with the Statement of Work.

U.S. -- Brazil Higher Education Consortia Program

The Department of Education announces the U.S.-Brazil Higher Education Consortia Program to support the formation of educational consortia of U.S. and Brazilian institutions. To meet this priority, the applicant must propose a project that supports cooperation in the coordination of curricula; the exchange of students, if pertinent to grant activities; and the opening of educational opportunities between the U.S. and Brazil. In order to be eligible for an award under this priority, the applicant in the U.S. must be a U.S. institution and the applicant in Brazil must be a Brazilian institution. The focus of the consortium can be an discipline.

The purpose of this grant program is to promote more than student exchange, it is also curriculum development as well as language and cultural preparation to promote student mobility. Students should be exchanged in the context of a common program of study or curriculum and should draw benefits from the added value of spending time abroad. The time abroad should count for their study within their academic major at their home institution and should not significantly increase their time to degree completion.

Amount: $240,000 (spread across four years)

Chinese Academy of Sciences Visiting Professor (Young Scientist)

The visiting professor fellowships, sponsored and funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), support collaborative scientific research opportunities in China for young scientists. The fellowships provide financial support for individual scientists to conduct cooperative research at one of the institutes of CAS. The funding period is for 12 months, and potentially renewable for up to a further 12 months.

Applicants for this fellowship must apply collaboratively. The research teams must include a young scientist who is a citizen of a nation having formal diplomatic relations with China (Chinese citizens are not eligible). The young scientist must be educated outside of China at the elementary school level and have a Ph.D. degree. Additionally, the young scientist must have strong communication skills in English. The research teams must also include a Chinese collaborator who is a researcher of CAS institutes, and is engaged in a major research program.

The Chinese collaborator must have a senior research position, and preferably a Ph.D. degree. Additionally, the Chinese collaborator must have facilities and capacity to conduct cooperative research with the visiting scientist. Scientists wishing to apply should begin by exploring research opportunities with collaborators within the institutes of the CAS. The grant will cover the recipient's (1) salary, (2) daily living allowance, (3) round-trip international airfare, and (4) health insurance, at a level determined by CAS according to the length of the visit and the academic level of the visitor.

The visiting professorships, sponsored and funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), support collaborative scientific research opportunities in China for senior scientists. The professorships provide financial support for individual scientists to conduct cooperative research at one of the institutes of CAS. They also provide support for visits of 2 to 12 months and are potentially renewable.

Applicants for this professorship must apply collaboratively. The research teams must include a scientist who is a citizen of a nation having formal diplomatic relations with China (Chinese citizens are not eligible). The scientist must have been educated outside of China at the elementary school level. The scientist must have a Ph.D. degree, with academic standing of at least associate professor or equivalent. Additionally, the senior scientist must have strong communication skills in English. The research teams must also include a Chinese collaborator who is a researcher at CAS institutes and is engaged in a major research program.
